Matthew Webb (mtwebb)  > Woodworking > 2008.03.11 Butcher Blocks
I have been wanting to make a nice solid end grain cutting board for a while, so when the thin, inexpensive one that was included with a kitchen island went bad, it provided the perfect excuse to make one.

Matthew Webb (mtwebb) > The project is underway! On the left you see the glued up wood of the original design (which you can barely make out in the drawings on the right)
Matthew Webb (mtwebb) > We bought a new saw blade just for this project. Pops does not like how hard purple heart is on his tools ("we might as well cut blocks of aluminum while were at it") but the color of it pairs perfectly with the curly maple so in it goes.
Matthew Webb (mtwebb) > With all the pieces cut, Dan an Vanessa make sure The layout of the pieces do not have any awkward tangents. You can start to see the basic design: staggered endgrain blocks of curly maple + a few accents in purple heart.
Matthew Webb (mtwebb) > The two boards glued up for the night. There are no photos of the actual gluing because it was a mad dash to get all the pieces glued up and in place before the glue set. Dad and I were glue spreaders, Mom fitted them and pops kept the time. So glad we numbered all the pieces and marked outside edge pieces with blue masking tape before starting. This reminds me. Pops needs more clamps for his birthday. We always seems to be trying to figure out a way to jury rig a clamp set up.
Matthew Webb (mtwebb) > Glued up some of the left over maple with some cherry for use in some smaller boards. (In the background note the fantastic wooden extension to the lathe)
Matthew Webb (mtwebb) > Playing around with designs using the leftover pieces. My favorite is the large single board with the two spares blocks beneath it, but I went with a design similar to the one on the bottom right because it used all the extra pieces.
Matthew Webb (mtwebb) > The next morning, Pops removing all the tape. Hope it set up nicely!?
Matthew Webb (mtwebb) > Success! There is a bunch of spare glue and uneveness on top, but all the seams are tight. whew....
Matthew Webb (mtwebb) > The scraper removes the glue and shapes the surface. I don't why, but I find this part very satisfying. I love how the scraper becomes hot from the friction.
