Matthew Webb (mtwebb)  > Other > 2009.03.05 Orchid Expo
Annual Orchid Exposition at Fort Mason. Fun to check out the 150,000 plants and see which one I'll slowly kill over the upcoming year.

Matthew Webb (mtwebb) > So last year, I bought two plants. I thought I was very smart picking this one because I liked it for the leaves more than the actual flower. "Even if it never blooms again, I'll still will be able to appreciate the cool, stained-glass like leaves" That of course assumed said leaves would not wither and die six months later. Alas. I did really like those leaves.
Matthew Webb (mtwebb) > The loss of the leaves was mitigated by the fact that orchid number two turned out to be a low maintenance bloom factory. It sent out multiple spikes, each of which produce 5-7 of these long, iridescent, pin-striped blooms. So the complete opposite of what I expected happened. The pedestrian orchid with interesting foliage died off, while the more exotic one with the crazy flowers repeatedly bloomed.
Matthew Webb (mtwebb) > I came close to buying these (dendrobia ??) from the orchid society members table (as opposed to the professional growers) but some of the leaves were yellow and spotted, so I passed. I do really like the many small flowers in contrast to a single large one.
Matthew Webb (mtwebb) > I don't know the flower name, but I like "Mr. Hyde" gnarled qualities of this one. It would be fun to pair it with a stately, 'Dr. Jekyll' version.
Matthew Webb (mtwebb) > The bright yellow-orange flowers paired well with the grey green leaves. and hanging from a tree trunk made for a tidy layout.
Matthew Webb (mtwebb) > There were a riot of color. Again the bright colors of the flowers were nicely complemented by the foliage.
Matthew Webb (mtwebb) > I like the almost creepy, elegant ones. These set reminded me of a bunch of giant yellow spiders, and I mean that in the best possible sense.
Matthew Webb (mtwebb) > The diversity of flower shapes is amazing. These had subtle gradiends from purple to translucent white that this photo does not really capture.
Matthew Webb (mtwebb) > Success! Jennifer's first outing to the orchid expo was clearly a success and Jamie and Lolly (seasoned pros) each picked out plants that complement their vast orchid collections. That just leaves Maureen...
